Are canned tomatoes BANNED from renal diets??? If so, what can be used in its place?

  • #2
I believe it is the acid that makes them off limits and they are high in potassium. There are a few recipes that use roasted red peppers but it doesn't really taste good. So not sure of any substitute. Sorry

Anything in moderation. If you want it eat only very little of it & be real strict with everything else.

They can be high in sodium, too. You could try blending vegetable stock with some vegetables that are allowed on the renal diet, then add that to your dish and cook as if it were tomatoes. I don't think there are tomatoes in vegetable stock, or if so, not much. Just be sure to get low-sodium stock or make your own. Over time I've gradually stopped using canned tomatoes and now saute my vegs and meat in olive oil. You get to where you don't miss them after a while.
