Q: I have stage 1 CKD should I go on a renal diet?
A: The renal (kidney) diet for a person in later stages of chronic kidney disease or on dialysis has restrictions on phosphorus and potassium that are not necessary for early stages CKD. Potassium is actually beneficial for blood pressure control in early stages. The best diet to follow for stage 1 CKD is a DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), with a protein goal that meets your individual needs. In stage 1, controlling blood pressure and blood sugar( if diabetic) are the most important area of diet focus. Thank you for posting this, I'm seeing the doctor to check and see if I have CKD1 on Monday. But I wanted to go to the grocery store and buy some kidney healthy foods sooner. Any specific suggestions from your own personal experience?
