alcohol
Generally speaking, is it safe for someone in stage 4 CKD to consume alcohol? If so, how much, in what form (beer, wine, hard liquor) and how often? Will alcohol consumption accelerate kidney failure in stage 4?

This is a great question, but a question for your Doctor.
I received the GIFT OF LIFE on Nov 9, 2010 thanks to my wonderful donor Laura and her family!

Re: alcohol
Dr appt is not for another couple weeks. What should I do until the appt? I do plan to ask. It hardly seems worthwhile to call just for this question.

Re: alcohol
lizzydew, You will probably find mixed reactions to your question even from Drs. From what I have read online, drinking alcohol in moderation for folks with ckd is ok. 1 drink per day for women and 2 for men is considered moderate drinking. Getting the ok from you Dr. is probably the best advice.

Re: alcohol
Hi I can't speak for you or anyone else but I asked my doctor and he said it was fine to have a drink if I wanted but in moderation. I have always enjoyed a drink so have continued to do so throughout my disease--I drink vodka and he said that this was better than beer or whisky. I don't think it does any harm and it's a nice relaxing thing to do at the weekend. I drink 4 or 5--that's my limit.
