Please Help! Need Answers on My Grandpa

My grandpa has been on dialysis for almost 7 years. He has started to be very short of breath and very fatigued. At one time he had swelling in his legs but that has gone. Help! I am not sure what is happening and what I need to do to help. Don't get any feedback from his doctor at all.

    Your Grandpa

I can't really supply any answers as to your medicall questions. I also have experiences with doctors not being helpful. I know how frustrating it can be especially if you are worried. Perhaps you can talk to one of the nurses. Just don't give up & stand your ground. Hang in there & good luck!

Dont' know if you have found out any information yet, but was wondering if the shortness of breath could be fluid build up in his lungs. You mentioned he sometimes has swelling in the legs - fluid build up as well.
    Good luck.

What your grandfather may be experiencing is a wrong "dry weight". If he is currently losing weight and the physicians havn't changed or lowered his dry weight, he could have extra fluid on board. Though you may not see the fluid in his legs or other extremeties, it could still be there. And it could also be in his lungs. A good idea for you would be to contact the charge nurse in the clinic that he attends and discuss a dry weight change. This could be a great help!

Also, a "dry weight" is a person ideal body weight without any extra fluid on board. If people have on too much fluid, it'll lead to shortness of breath as well as swelling.

    Dry Weight

I would have most empatically that there is a dry weight problem. He possibly needs to be dialyszed longer. Not necessarily ripped off that fluid at a high rate. That will do no good except to make him sicker. Is there a chance to get him to a home program where some one in the family could dialyze him correctly?
