parathyroid test (PTH Intact)

I had some test done because they found that I had osteoporosis. The test was done before I started on medication. The PTH Intact was Extremly high (142) Before sending me to an endochronoligest (sp?), she talked to my kidney Dr. Appt'ly he said it could be tied in with the kidney disease. They are trying Calcitriol. Does anyone know about this problem with the parathyroid and how it ties in to kidney disease? I guess I can ask the Dr. when I go, but I would like to know about it in "lay terms". Genia 2

You are saying that your parathyroid levels are high, right? If you are running high why are you taking calcitriol? I do not have any parathyroids, and I take calcitriol. It helps process calcium and other things. But I have low calcium - hypocalcemia- cause I do not have parathyroid glands (hypoparathyroid). Parathyroids are tied to the kidneys because they control calcium (parathyroid glands), and calcium goes to your kidneys as well. Too much calcium damages kidneys (which is what happens with me some and others who are hypoparathyroid).

I don't know why I am taking it other than he ordered it!! All of this was done by phone after the blood test, I looked up the med, and I haven't been back since . My calcium is a low normal. I take calcium, and I guess I need to for my osteoporosis I fell several months ago and fractured both wrist. I am very confused and I must go visit the Dr. I looked up Calteroil and it sounded like somme type of glorified Vit D. Several months ago my Vit D was low and I took high doses of D and It got built up. Thanks for the information. The Bone Density spec. was about to send me to an endochronoligest, She said it might be a tumor.on one of the parathyroids. Is that the reason you don't have yours? She decided to call my Kidney Dr. instead.

Hi genie, i have been taking rocalitrol, since my thyroid gland removal surgery, i started taking calcitrol first, when my PTH was entering the 1,000 level mark, and during this time, which was in 2000, my neph at the time, was only re adjusting my rocalitrol, and this went on for more than six months, and then by the Grace of God, i was assigned a new neph, due to my secondary insurance issues, but it was a blessing that i was re assigned a new neph, because he immediately looked over all my medical records, and noticed that i had very high PTH levels, and he couldn't understand why my thyroid glands hadn't been removed, now, me being new to all this PTH mess, i didn't know why, because i was relying on my neph to know what to do, but it goes to show you, that some doctors don't research enough, and i of course, left it in his hands to remedy my thryoid health situation. Oh, where was I, my new neph, immediately scheduled me to have some of my thyroid glands removed, and placed in my forearm, (in case of future thyroid issues), i finally had the surgery, but i wasn't allowed to be discharge the same day, i was told by my neph, pre-surgery, that they need to watch me overnite, and it was a good thing that they did, because my calcium plummeted, and they were aware that this could happen, but the good thing, is that i was in the hospital when it happened, and it could be remedied. On discharge, i was prescribed rocaltriol, as well as sensipar. Let me share a little facts about PTH. read on.

PTH - is the Parathyroid Hormone. This also helps to keep your bones healthy, when it is in normal range, but when the phosphorus in your blood becomes too high, you disturb the balance of the phosphorus and calcium. Your body then begans to sense this imbalance and then the parathyroid gland in your neck will send a message to take calcium from your bones, this eventually makes the bones become brittle, because apparently too much calcium has been removed from your bones, and the end result of this is, renal bone disease, and calcification in soft tissues, (such as the heart and lungs). Elevated levels increase your risk for renal bone disease. So, you see, Phosphorus, Calcium and PTH, work hand in hand, (they get along so well, when you keep all three of them happy) (lol), so to speak, and just remember, just about everything we eat has some degree of phosporus in the intake, but some have more phosphorus than others, such as cheeses, and dairy products, so just remember, when indulging in cheeses and dairy products, keep it to a minimum, because Mr. Phosphorus is lurking around the corner to wreak havoc.

PTH normal range is - 150 to 300. and Phosphorus normal range is - 3.0 - 5.5. and Calcium is - 8.4 - 9.4. What i don't understand, til this day, why phosphorus isn't included in the nutritional facts of products, but it is wise, if you can make a habit of checking out the ingredients of products, and if you spot, anything with the letters - Phos, then you know it is a form of phosphorus, but what content of phosphorus it is, that we don't know, just be wise, and limit whatever, where the phosporus is concerned, and by all means, take those binders, (they are a Godsend blessing for us dialysis patients), and i learned this the hard way back in the early 90's.

I did see somewhere on the computer that normal was something like 30-60. This is real strange. To show how new and "stupid" I am to this whole problem, I thought when prople talked about about Neph that they were refering to a blood test!! lol Then it came to me that they ment Nepth, the Dr. I have a long way to go!! Maybe with your help, by the time I get on dialysis, if I do, I will be more educated, even though my spelling will probably still be BAD. If I have spell check, on this area of the computer, I can't seem to find it. My memory is the pitts, also.

I was hyperthyroid with Graves disease, and had my thyroid removed, and my parathyroid glands were removed in the process- i will never know if it was accidental or on purpose, but thats another issue - lol.
