    short of breath?

I'm stage 4 raging from 18 - 20 GFR. I don't excercise. I say I'm gonna start but never do. When I do little things it is really hard like walking into a store from parking lot totally out of breath and tired, or I was folding a tarp slow at my own pace and the bending over and doing it totally got me so out of breath my back and chest hurt and I had to rest. Just walking to mailbox and back get me breathing so so hard? Why is this and is this related to the CKD????

    Thanks,

    Charli

    Re: short of breath?

Hi Charli, welcome to the Davita forum! You have come to the right place! Yes, this is related to CKD. I am stage 3 GFR 59 and this was one of my first symptoms, this is what put me in ER. This happened to me because my potassium levels were not quite right. While I was in ER the doctors got me hooked up with a cardiologist. I found out that I have arrythmia, my GP says that this is not related, to CKD, but I believe that CKD has magnified my heart issue. Other folks will be responding to your question offering excellent insight as well. Again, keep posting, please come back.

    Re: short of breath?

    Hi charli,

Shortness of breath is very common for stage 4 kidney failure. Three things may contribute to the fatigue and shortness of breath: 1.) Anemia - Please get your H &H checked. Your doctors may start you on Procrit in order to help your red blood cells. 2.) Potassium - If you have either hypokalemia or hyperkalemia your muscles are affected. This includes your heart which may beat very heavily. 3.) Uremia - The build up of toxins in your system may contribute to feelings of weakness. Have your doctor give you a complete blood work up for kidney patients and I am sure they will be able to help you to feel more energetic. I hope that you will be feeling better soon. Take care.

    Re: short of breath?

My dad had a lot of problems with shortness of breath a couple of months back. They ended up changing his dry weight and taking more fluid off of him. This seemed to help with his shortness of breath. Before his dry weight was changed there were many dialysis sessions that they just filtered his blood not taking any fluid off. At the time he might get 1/8 of a liter taken off and that was it. I'm sure many others have had this happen and will give you great advice.

Chuck, go for the Epogen. Most of the scariest side effects apply only if they use it to bring your hemoglobin up above 13. I found it to be a miracle drug. The only side effect that I experienced was joint pain.

    Re: short of breath?

Tao3000, I am also stage 4 (diagnosed in September with CKD). I just recently saw my PCP because my legs get tired very quickly and hurt. I also experience numbness and cold in my fingers and toes. I'm still waiting on the official word, but the doctor is thinking peripheral vascular disease regarding my legs, which makes me feel tired. That could be a possibility for you. Have you seen your doctor lately? I too am wanting to start exercising again but am having a hard time right now because of this issue with my legs.
Please let us know how you are doing.

MM (stage 5) also has extremely cold fingers and toes.

I believe this to be due to Uremia, as Samsonsmom mentioned. MM has metabolic acidosis and his albumin is 1.6. I think all this plays together and comes out with shortness of breath, cold digits and nausea. We are about to start taking Bicitrate to combat these issues and he is taking the amino acids (alternative NOT medical).

Ask the Neph on the next appt or give him/her a call.

I am using a natural iron from Flora

    http://www.florahealth.com/flora/hom...cts/r64771.asp

it really works as the other irons I've tried always make me sick.
I've never has any problems with this product and have been using it 15 years so far....
My only "issue" with it is it is kinda expensive for me as it is not covered by drug plans...and also remembering to take it every day, lol

    Re: short of breath?

MALIBU, doctor is leaning towards Raynaud's syndrome regarding my fingers and toes. That might be what MM has. Has he been to see his doctor?

CHUCK, my boyfriend thinks my blood pressure medication is what is causing my legs to become tired and hurt. I wish that were the case, but I'm leaning towards the PAD which I believe has been caused by or is at least some sort of offshoot of having this wonderful CKD. I have an appointment later this month with a doctor at the Heart and Vascular Center. Not looking forward to it since the last time my PCP made an appointment with a specialist for me I was told I had CKD! I know it is good to walk, walk, walk and that is my problem right now...I can't walk very far without having to stop because my legs get so tired and really hurt. I will be asking the specialist when I see him but is any of this reversible, or just treatable?

Keep us posted as to how you are doing and progressing.

CHUCK, Thanks for the info. I never really ate too many fats, but I am a former smoker. Funny though because now since I have CKD, just about the only thing I can eat unlimited is fat and sugar. All of these health problems that I'm getting has taken such an emotional toll on me.
