  • Hi I am new here . I was just told last week I have stage 3 renal insufficiency. Which everywhere I searched led to Ckd . I am very worried . as my doctor does not feel i have anything to worry about . nor has he sent me to a specialist. I am a bit confused as to y he wants to wait another 3 months to check labs again. He said i had stage 2/3 In 2014 and he just told me this last week.

    • Find a quality Nephrologist and have him/her test you. Your primary care dr is playing with your health. Stage 3 can drop to stage 5 overnight and kidney failure can be deadly. At stage 3 you should be thinking about doing dialysis and lining up a transplant. I lived with stage 3 for over 11 years, it was not easy, then one day my kidneys totally stopped working.

One thing is for certain your kidneys will only get worse as time goes by. Your body is telling you that your kidneys have worn out and they need help. You help them through diet and exercise. Lose weight if you need to, quit smoking and drinking if you do those either. No recreational drug use. Start planning on getting an AV fistula sooner than later. Good luck.

Hi Dee I am also stage 3 ckd. In stage three you will only be checked every three months on blood work. I was referred to my nephrologist at stage three. I have been in stage 3 for almost two years. Did your doctor take more than one blood test over a course of three months. I read that most doctors take three blood tests to make sure it is actually kidney disease. Then referred to a nephrologist. In stage 2 most doctors don't refer you to a nephrologist. Stage 3 yes. Seeing that you are stage 2/3 they are probably at wait and see. I can say you can help yourself in the meantime. If you are overweight lose weight. If you smoke stop. If you drink stop. Lower your sodium intake. Exercise. Be the best you can be and maybe you won't progress in the disease. You can at least postpone its progression. Don't panic just yet. Everyone is different and you may never end up at stage five. You didn't say how old you are. Listen to your doctor and learn all you can. The more you know the less you will worry. Get copies of all your blood work and learn what it means. It will tell you a lot. I know it is frightening I really do. I am sorry you have to deal with this. If you want to talk just message me. You are not alone.

          • Dee I am 52. I have learned a lot by reading many websites and talking to people on the forum. If you take care of yourself it will go a long way to keeping you at stage three as long as possible.

            • Naproxen Sodium is just one cause of kidney failure, there are many. Being overweight, drinking, using other drugs, anti-biotics, etc.... If you modify your diet and exercise you can maintain stage 3 for a few years. I doubled my efforts after my kidneys gave out and I went on peritoneal dialysis; to get back into shape and now I dialysis a lot less than some people 3 - 4 nights per week.

I am 53 years old and besides my kidneys not working the rest of my body is strong. My heart is in great shape, BP and pulse are like a 20 year old, my A1c is 5.2, bodyfat at 16% and I still have all my hair, well 95% of it anyway. Dialysis is not the end of your life, I still plan on dying at 105 years old!

PS my avatar is my fearsome Rat Terrier, that picture always makes me smile.

                  • Thank you, can be quite a daunting time and as easy it would be to talk to family and friends I don't want to worry them. How are you all all doing and feeling? Have you started to notice a change in how you feel? X

I don't really feel bad. Right now the only thing I notice is lack of sleep which for me could be caused by the CKD or menopause. Also some muscle soreness in my legs which may be lack of exercise. Other than that I feel pretty good.

Has your nephrologist given you a timeline concerning dialysis or kidney transplantation yet? Once you hit stage 4 it is usually just a matter of time until you slip into End Stage Renal Failure. Ask your nephrologist to talk with you about your options. Good luck in the future.

                            • I have just started seeing a nephrologist when I was hospitalized for a benign cardiac condition so no timeline yet. I have an appointment this week with him to over my most recent labs. Thanks for the advice,
