Does any one have a remedy for leg cramps. About 1 hr after I complete my home dialysis I get bad cramps in my legs.

montauk great question. Leg cramps can occur post dialysis treatment for different reasons. The cramping could be associated with blood pressure, fluid balance or electrolytes that shift during dialysis. Check your weight and blood pressure to determine if you are close to your target weight. If you are below your target weight you may have removed too much fluid which could cause you to have cramps. Your sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium levels may also need to be checked which may be contributing to post dialysis cramping. The best approach is to call your dialysis nurse with your pre and post treatment details and fluid removal information which will help guide the nurse to determine what may be causing the cramping.

I have had severe cramping during and after dialysis (PD). MY PCP put me on two pills: Magnesium Oxide 400 mg tablets, and Potassium CL Micro 10 MEQ ER Tabs. Take both once daily, in the afternoon. cramps are all gone. Somehow, the Potassium pills do not affect your blood tests at all.
